Stone selection & installation in Colorado

For Denver, the Front Range and Mountain West, match each stone and finish to its intended exposure, load and setting method. Color alone does not establish freeze-thaw suitability. Request supplier test data and written guidance for the exact stone, thickness and finish before specifying exterior work.

Drainage, movement & winter exposure

Provide positive drainage and a properly prepared, compacted base. Confirm slope, setting materials, joints and movement details with your installer and the supplier. Standing water and saturated assemblies increase the risk of winter damage. Check deicing-salt compatibility; do not assume every natural stone tolerates salts.

Retaining wall design

Distinguish decorative garden walls from load-retaining structures. Wall height, retained soil, surcharge, drainage, foundation conditions and local requirements determine whether engineered design and permits are needed. Confirm lifting access and equipment for large stone blocks.
